There is so much to do on Arran that we can come back year after year and still find new walks, cycles and places of interest to visit.
Arran is known as Scotland in miniture since the Highland Boundary Fault cuts the island in half. So, the North is Highland and the South is Lowland. And there's the Arran Coastal path which goes right round the island.
To get over to Arran Calmac run regular ferries from Ardrossan and Troon and the previous problems have been resolved. If you are not sure then phone CalMac you'll find their people very friendly and very helpful and since CalMac is subsidised by the Scottish Government you'll find that the fares are very reasonable.
We will be using Lamlash as our base. Lamlash is ideal, it's only 3 miles from the ferry terminal and 3 miles from Brodick which is the main commercial centre. However, there's plenty in Lamlash, a Co-op, hotels, cafes, pubs, AirBnBs, B&Bs, the Arran Sleep huts and Middletons Camping. This year (2025) two people stayed in the Bay Hotel and they were very pleased with it.
I will be staying at Middletons, it's just on the edge of Lamlash and is ideal for camping, campervans and caravans. Recently the site was taken over and the new owners are doing a fantastic job improving the site. This year I spoke with one of the owners and he assured me that if anyone makes a booking and has to call off for any reason they will get a full refund, no problem. You can book Middletons on their web site at:
https://www.middletonsarran.co.uk/
Though organised through OutdoorDuo, ex-members, family and friends are very welcome to join this trip.
Also, you don't need to come for the full week, just join in whenever it suits you.
So, book your holiday, put it in your diary and for the 5th year we'll have another great time.

I've taken over the admin for this invite of JohnH's as he's not able to do it. I've not changed any of the wording on his invite.
KTKath_TI hope a lot of people attend as it'll be a good tribute to John.
I have booked accommodation in Lamlash from 6 to 13 May 2026.
RCRoland_CLooking forward to it.
That's great Roland, glad you'll be there.
on 02/09/25 @ 13:42Just to clarify, the full week is 6th - 13th May and a lot of people do come for the whole week but people are also welcome to come for part of the week.
KTKath_TFerries from Ardrossan run instead from Troon to Brodick much of the time at least until the end of March says the CalMac website (and as I experienced in July 2025) so be wary if using public transport to get to port or booking without first speaking with CalMac. The problem seems to be ongoing/long term.
CMChris MurisThanks Chris, unfortunately it's been like that for the last 2 years that we've been in May. We'll have to see what the situation is when we can book the ferries, probably later this year.
KTKath_TI will be going 👍🏻😀
AnneThat's great Anne. Have you booked accommodation or will you be camping?
KTKath_TKath_T: hi …. I will camp 👍🏻😀
AnneNow then..are there any musical people going to Arran? When i was last there, John H rallied us all into a pretty good sing-song round the camp fire. It was brilliant!
clclarelySo wouldn’t it be great to do something in his memory?
I can play and sing..but it would be great if anyone else does also and we can get a Set List together lol😃. It has to be done…John would expect nothing less.
That's brilliant Clare, that you're wanting to organise this in memory of John. He would be proud of you.
KTKath_TI'm sure there'll be plenty of people to sing but as you say it would be good if some people can play the guitar or another instrument.
I think we'd definitely need to sing Wild Mountain Thyme, some Eagles and 'I would walk 500 miles' for John.
Kath_T: Spot on Kath..i will look into those suggestions!
clclarelyJohn always made me laugh because just about every song he sung was performed in a strong Glasgow accent. I loved it!
We have to do that for Wild Mountain Thyme! However.i think i will be in tears throughout that particular song😢
I think I'll be in tears too Clare especially if you try to sing Wild Mountain Thyme in a Glasgow accent!
KTKath_TI can have a go Kath..so it’ll be tears of laughter as well as sad tears!
clclarelyGill and I have booked a cottage for the week. Looking forward to it. Nick
SMSaltyMcSaltfaceThat's great Nick. I'll give Sheila your mobile numbers so that she can put you both on the Arran WhatsApp group that she's set up. It's already active.
on 23/10/25 @ 8:51Please can the following definites; Marina, Anne, Wen, KC and clearbluesky send SheilaB a private message to give her your mobile numbers so that she can add you to the Arran WhatsApp group. All activities are organised through the WhatsApp group and it's already active so if you can do it as soon as possible you won't miss things.
KTKath_TI already have your mobile number Ian so I'll pass it on to Sheila.
If anyone else puts themselves down as a definite then please message Sheila so that she can add you to the WhatsApp group.
