W3W, OS-L and emergency location
by Flat cap (Mike)As an outdoor group I feel we should stay informed about how to get located by rescue services in emergencies.
The aggressively promoted What3Words app apparently is a far worse choice than OS Locate for oral communication in emergency situations due to its use of homophones, similar sounding words and plurals, as well as strong accents (mind you, Billy Bigfoot and I hardly understand each other at the best of times), and both apps suffer from poor lines. The best option still seems to be staying connected so that the services can pinpoint you with PhoneFind. Have a read of the link below.
Indoors however, W3W definitely is superior to OS-L (and even more so to rural post codes or vague descriptions) for organising meeting points, and I would suggest it as gold standard for OD invites.

For me (and any other neanderthals or troglodytes amongst us), a grid reference might be useful for finding a meeting point!
M1M1960Mark, OS Locate gives you the grid reference
FcFlat cap (Mike)Hi Mike – I don't have enough room left on my ancient phone to download OS Locate or W3W, and I thought you were suggesting that people should use W3W anyway. I was trying to say that it might be useful to some people to include the grid reference of the meeting point on an invite.
