Bag an Ethel soon
by Lazlo WoodbineWe have heard of Munros and Wainwrights. Well there is now a more modest hill walking challenge. This involves making the summit of 95 hills in the Peak District either over 400m or having great prominence e.g. Parkhouse Hill and Thorpe Cloud aren't particularly high but have steep ascents. Named after Ethel Haythornthwaite who was widowed at 22 during WW1 she found consolation and peace of mind from walking the hills of Derbyshire. She later was instrumental in the purchase of land for public use and in the birth of the National Park and formed the CPRE charity. She has the advantage that she was a nicer person than Wainwright who apparently was a bit of bumhole.
