I'd try something like Melolin (Boots will probably do an unbranded version), its got a sort of shiny side that goes against the wound but doesn't stick, but allows air to circulate and dry it out, it comes in a square pad and you cut it to size and just stick it on with micropore tape. I think compeed is only intended for unpopped blisters. NB I am not medically trained but have a lot of blister experience due to my duck-like feet 😀

on 02/04/13 @ 12:21

and if you have areas that always blister, I'd recommend the Compeed blister stick and/or a bit of animal wool (also from Boots, not just pulled off a barbed wire fence!) as a prevention - no good if the skin is already broken though 🙂

PDPear Drop (Sarah)   on 02/04/13 @ 12:23

Compeed blister patches should never be placed onto broken skin,it can cause a nasty infection. It may well be worth speaking to your local Pharmasist, for a better alternative than Melolin.Use a dry dressing only,no Savlon or anything else🙂

lalandranger68   on 02/04/13 @ 12:38

Cobblers 🙂

FlForever lost   on 02/04/13 @ 13:46

I know that now LR67 I would normally put nothing on but on this occassion it keeps tightening up and gets difficult stretching as I walk. Thanks Sarah68 that's more like what I should be looking for. I'll take both your advice and go to the pharmacy tomorrow.
Sorry Bimble :~
Thanks for the sympathy FL!

The Mind is Willing   on 02/04/13 @ 14:01

I remember reading about some cream you could treat your feet with regularly & it prevented blisters, am trying to google for it! ☹

BJBlue John   on 02/04/13 @ 14:01

Thanks Cath. I am wearing flip flops cos I can't wear anything else but it's a little cold!! :~😀 I'll be fine just want it mended faster than normal cos I need to get some walking exercise in now I'm doing Hadrians Wall

on 02/04/13 @ 14:26

I think I'll just have to be patient. I'm not putting yoghurt on it!!! :~😀

The Mind is Willing   on 02/04/13 @ 14:27

Sorry Love only read the bold print🙂don't put yoghurt on it Love makes a right mess on the sheets🙂

FlForever lost   on 02/04/13 @ 14:38

EUREKA 🙂🙂🙂 Its called Stride Out Foot Oil, it is supposed to prevent blisters & sore feet. Available from Cotswold Outdoor & featured as product of the month in Trail magazine last September 😀

BJBlue John   on 02/04/13 @ 14:56

Why would eating yoghurt make my heel heal faster?!! I'm glad I'm not a Nurse Gpg - God help the patients!!!! 😮:~
I don't need to soften my feet Minty - they're clearly too soft as it is!!
Thanks BJ might try that after it has all healed up

The Mind is Willing   on 02/04/13 @ 15:13

Nasty. Never understand blisters, can do a 26 mile walk one day and be fine🙂 and then do an 8 mile walk the next day and get blisters!!☹
Good luck sorting out.

JWJW   on 02/04/13 @ 15:31

Germolene new skin works well 🙂
Stings when first put on though lol

WiWiggy   on 02/04/13 @ 15:38

Sorry to hear about you poorly heal Claudette, but thanks for making me smile ... I've really giggled reading this thread 😀😀😀

DJDebbieJ   on 02/04/13 @ 15:46

Thanks JW. Everything stings at the moment Wiggy but that might be a good suggestion. Glad I can keep you amused DebbieJ - it's making me less grumpy too! 😀

The Mind is Willing   on 02/04/13 @ 15:59

Sorry to hear you're suffering claudette, haven't had any blisters yet luckily so can't advise, but one of my fears when walking, lots of good information above for everyone to digest, hope you're on the trail again soon.🙂

jwjw19   on 02/04/13 @ 17:16

Ask jo.She had loads of issues on the Cumbrian way!!!Sorry Jo,ya know i luv ya really x

ADAlly & Dave   on 02/04/13 @ 17:57

Oh no poor you, do you swim, maybe you could do some swimming instead of walking till your heel is better, will help build your muscles and stamina for our walk,
Hope its better soon 🙂

MoMorningdawn  on 02/04/13 @ 18:49

Bepathen (aka nappy cream) - great for freshly done tattoos & great for healing any skin quickly - never without mine 🙂

LMLittle Miss Sunshine (Max)   on 02/04/13 @ 19:09

Smother your feet woth vaseline before you go out walking as a prevention method , used to work at the start the football season when pitches hard

cacapricornwelsh   on 02/04/13 @ 19:26

So would you say that the problem is restriction??? and perhaps a bigger sized boot and two pairs of socks and abit of room for growth when they're hot may be the answer ??

FlForever lost   on 03/04/13 @ 2:34

yes the Surgical spirit/meths thing might work, Its what ballet dancers used to use to toughen their feet especially if going on point.(don't ask!!)

You will of course end up with feet like hooves and need a farrier to get back into your slinky high heels!!!🙂

trtrekkie  on 03/04/13 @ 4:10

Some good advice here and it's nice to know folk care! 🙂 I may try the surgical spirit but not til they've healed that's for sure!!!! 😮:~ I did wear a thin sock and then a walking sock Cat and it wasn't as if the walks were difficult. I really couldn't put a finger on why this time!
Restriction has always been my problem FL but they say it's for my own good!!! 😈😈

Thanks Guys, I think the fresh air and maybe the germoline/Bepathan/Iodine will do the trick for now.

The Mind is Willing   on 03/04/13 @ 5:31

Us guys TMiW will have to transport you about just like the Queen of Sheba, not sure if its the right weather for a parasol🙂

BMBionic Man   on 03/04/13 @ 11:18

I love this - so much advice in one thread. Hope your blisters heal quickly, please report back on what works. I had a similar problem a while ago, boots that I'd had for quite a long time started giving me blisters. I ended up buying new boots. But the old ones are ok again now.

TCTC   on 03/04/13 @ 11:40

Think my problem is oddly shaped toes, not a lot can do about that.
Has anyone tried duct tape?

JWJW   on 03/04/13 @ 12:54

Stargazer what a wonderful idea! We could have a fur throw instead of a parasol! 😈😈😈

The Mind is Willing   on 03/04/13 @ 14:32

Hope your feet are feeling better today TMiW,lots of good advice 🙂

Tinks   on 03/04/13 @ 14:50

At last the voice of reason, well done johnwalking, 'DUCT TAPE' is the only thing that'll stay in place and as Glen says, takes the abuse that the friction is causing, nothing else is as good. Doubling socks will sometimes cause folds which cause even more blisters and any form of lube will cause even more movement escalating the problem, Avoid compede as it tends to breakdown, move and so becomes useless, handy at home but not for a long walk. Best advice is as soon as you get a hot spot from boots or ideally even before you set out. if you know your feet/heels are tender or blistered, bang on the duct tape, works every time 100%, that is as long as you hvae your boots on the right feet 😋

RRourky  on 03/04/13 @ 14:50

Great advice rourky's....but to speed up the healing process of your heels ,tmiw, soak them in tea tree oil 🙂🙂

BBBrecon Beauty   on 04/04/13 @ 11:42

Off to Halfords🙂

JWJW   on 04/04/13 @ 11:49

Tea tree oil on broken skin BB really?

The Mind is Willing   on 04/04/13 @ 18:45

Yep a few drops diluted in your bath or foot spa will really help 🙂🙂

BBBrecon Beauty   on 05/04/13 @ 3:25

Hey Hillmale and Rourkey....bang on advice for prevention. I carry elastoplast tape and scissors in my ruckie.. Soon as I feel a little soreness coming on then off comes the boot and on with the tape. End of..🙂

on 05/04/13 @ 5:43

Claudette, sorry you are suffering now ☹ and wishing you speedy repair...Thanks to all those who have posted remedies, this is useful for us all😉

SpSpring   on 05/04/13 @ 5:53

I am now feeling slightly silly for spending so much over the years on blister remedies when a bit of duct tape would've done the trick. But does it not peel off when you sweat? Do you just put a little patch on or do you wrap it round your feet like a bandage? :~

PDPear Drop (Sarah)   on 05/04/13 @ 7:18

Sorry to hear youve suffered but i think weve all been there. If you already have a blister or one thats broken then as suggested use melanin gauze to soak up any fluid and pad out, over this goes the duct tape and you should have no further problems as it wont budge when walking even when wet. And as for hot spots as already said get that tape on asap or youll regret it. Only problem with duct tape is one for the blokes ie hairy legs, instant waxing when removed. That said theres some ladies on site that should take note as they have hobbit like hairy feet, aint that right Liz & Jo 🙂😉😋

RRourky  on 05/04/13 @ 14:19

Thanks Spring. It's drying out now but still tender. Just painful with shoes - pressure on the heel! My blisters always pop during the walk and then the rubbing pulls the skin off! Note to self - duct tape for Hadrian's wall!! 🙂

The Mind is Willing   on 05/04/13 @ 15:45

Hope feet heal up soon Claudette and as for you Liz, mmm got me thinking now😉

RRourky  on 05/04/13 @ 17:29

Hi Claudette, to help keep your in nice condition, use cheap Aqueous Cream BP . Any supermarket should do it I got mine from. Lidle , I found its great for feet use at night and put socks on as its stays a bit oily,

TTTerence ( Terry )   on 06/04/13 @ 3:44

You can repair tents with it 🙂

on 06/04/13 @ 18:58

According to the search 101 uses for duct tape you can tape a hyperactive child to a tree with it. make a canoe & use it to repair Y-fronts 🙂🙂

BJBlue John   on 06/04/13 @ 19:16

😈😈😈😈
This is becoming quite amusing. Cheering me up whilst I'm laid up! Thanks guys 🙂

The Mind is Willing   on 07/04/13 @ 8:25

Just back from my first OD weekend. I put duct tape on my feet. Didn't get a blister but the big boys and girls laughed at me 😀😀

PDPear Drop (Sarah)   on 07/04/13 @ 16:21

Yes but who's smiling now??!! 🙂

on 07/04/13 @ 17:06

I was hoping it wasn't a plaster Minty. I was hoping it would be too smooth for my boots to create friction. They are new boots Minty I can't afford to give up on them without further investigation. Ear protectors wouldn't save you Minty and you most certainly would feel something - maybe a right hook!!!! :~😋😈

The Mind is Willing   on 13/04/13 @ 10:10

The Mind is Willing   on 16/04/13 @ 8:06

have you tried using thin gel insoles to slightly lift your foot in the boot. maybe wait until the blister heels up properly before you walk again.
ws.

wswandering star   on 16/04/13 @ 8:39

Hi WS
Thanks for that - that's my next move. 🙂
Insoles bought heels healing nicely ta

The Mind is Willing   on 16/04/13 @ 12:10

I have just bought some Scarpa Cyclone because the tread on my old Berghaus boots is quite worn & the Scarpa have vibram sole, have worn them on short walks & am building up but still love the loose fit of my old ones. Am hoping the new ones will wear in a bit looser & I can wear them longer soon :~

BJBlue John   on 16/04/13 @ 16:49

I bought some Scarpa Delta Active and they were comfy out of the box, Did 11 miles straight off in them no problem, then 8 the next day, they are really grippy as well on most surfaces. They also do a ladies which has a narrower last. I've had them for 4 months now without any bother so would recommend them, they weren't cheap but money well spent I think.🙂

on 16/04/13 @ 17:26

I didn't mean they were B. 🙂

jwjw19   on 16/04/13 @ 17:31

No two pairs of feet are the same so there will always be difference of opinion when choosing a boot. I don't particularly care if they are a famous make I just care if they are comfortable :~🙂

on 17/04/13 @ 5:36

Comfortable for me that is! 🙂
