Snowdon advice please
by TCAm taking my young un up Snowdon this summer. I've not been up there myself yet so wondering which route would be best/easiest? Can't decide between the Ranger Path or the Pyg/Miners tracks. Was going to go up in the Easter hols but have postponed as not confident the weather will improve enough.

Hi TC, MG is probably your best person for this. From a personal point of view, there's not much between the Miners and the Pyg tracks as they start and end at the same place (up one down the other?). If you manage to get parked on the Pen-y-Pass car park (£10)you're already around a third of the way to the summit so logic suggests they should be the easiest route up. The downside is the world and his wife use these so weekends are best avoided in the summer. There's a bit of a discussion on live for the outdoors website about the Ranger track. To me this looks like a nicer route and a lot quieter, one I'd certainly like to do if you put this on as an invite ""🙂🙂
BGBustaGut (Grant)Hi TC, as above the miners or pyg track, have done part of the ranger track and it is much quieter over that side🙂
Advice from experienced local walkers will be invaluable, this site link has some lovely aerial views of the paths that I found useful & interesting. 🙂

Hi Tc, As has been said, car parking is difficult at pen-y-pass, however in the Sumer there is a regular bus service that runs from Llanberis. If you do start from pen-y-pass and follow the pyg track, where the track splits, make sure you don't take the route up to Crib Goch. This is a challenging route, even in the summer.
MMMatterhorn Man (MM)Crib Goch, challenging....MM something of an understatement unless you have no fear of heights whatsoever:~:~
BGBustaGut (Grant)Hi TC,
on 19/03/13 @ 18:17My advice would be to go up the pyg track. It takes about an hour and a half to get up to the top from pen y pass.
Go left from the car park....
If you park in Llanberis there's an open top red bus that will take you to the car park at pen y pass. That's always good fun.And a great start to the day.
If the weathers nice follow the train line down and you'll come across a white house about three quarters of the way down, that sells only Welsh refreshments.... its really quaint.
Hope that helps mate
right at the car park !!!!! Drrrrr
dadavemMy first (and only time as yet) walk up Snowdon was up the Miners Track, as my companion decided that this would be a good first route. It wasn't too difficult but challenging enough and with beautiful lakes to see on the way up. Scrambling over the rocks towards the top was fun, which your littlun may enjoy 🙂
MPMPChinchillaIt depends how little is little! Pen-y-pass is great for those without stamina. Older kids - circa 11/12 upwards or those used to walking regularly can easily handle any of the other routes up, though they are much bigger days. The miners is a long dull plod up a virtual road - though good for the descent on tired legs as its easy walking. Echo the Llanberis bus and down the railway path idea above. A good route.
on 21/03/13 @ 6:54p.s. You can park in Llanberis by the lake for free, or where the path comes down near the railway somewhere here: http://goo.gl/maps/y3Anu
Thank you all. Think will follow Davem's advice. Better get the YHA booked! Sorry Bustagut this one is just for me and my girl. Wouldn't recommend Snowdon in school hols to anyone who does not have kids! Funny thing is I think I've been to that white house before, years ago, even though I've not been to the summit. Must have been when I was road cycling in the area.
on 24/03/13 @ 10:27And as for Crib Goch, she would probably love it, not least because she would enjoy seeing me suffer.
TCTCI took my boys up Snowdon a few summers ago when they were about 6 and 8. We headed up Pyg track and came down Llanberis path - far less interesting but we were camping near YH there. Downside of going up there in summer is the hordes of people on the tracks and at the summit. It just doesn't seem right! An ice cream at white house cafe is a compulsory reward. Cheers Davem for tip about open top bus - I'll try that next time.
I would love to do this trek also with my sons when the weather lets up. Maybe second bank holiday weekend in May. I believe its completely atrocious there this weekend.
MNMadNadHi Vashtee. Welcome to the site. I.m doing a walk next Friday with Keith if you would like to join us🙂
ScScoutHi Scout. Where are you walking and what time? I'm at work on Friday though and probably won't be able to make it. Thanks for the invite anyway. Would have loved to walk on Friday.
MNMadNadJust to break some news, sounds like conditions on Snowdon at very treacherous as climber has been killed today after falling 100 ft, hope he wasn't an OD member. Conditions are not good for walkers either with wind chill factor down to -20 and snow becoming like glass. The mountain rescue team are advising caution on the welsh mountains over the next few weeks and be fully prepared if you venture out.:~:~
RaRick and Viv's AdventuresIt sounds like he was ice climbing on Glyder Fawr when he fell, also a couple airlifted off Carnedd Dafydd in the next valley
