TGO Challenge

BBC R4 programme Last Word on 31 October 2025 speaks of the recent death of Roger Smith, the founder of the magazine The Great Outdoors magazine and co- founder of the annual west east cross Scotland walking challenge, the first of which took place, I think, in 1989. Much tradition has evolved such as finishing in Melrose and reunion gatherings. And there are rules such as to submit and obtain approval of entrant's route, which needn't be the fastest or easiest or most direct. An ideal framework for OD members to get together in May although overall entrants limited, I believe, to 400 per year. No guarantees of the brilliant weather seen in May 2025.
